Webinar: Models and Assumptions in Inclusive STEM Education

Presenter: Professor Carrie Diaz Eaton (Bates College)

Description:

Change in STEM education is multiscale. At each scale there are new questions to ask and new opportunities. One key skill we teach in science and mathematics is to investigate assumptions and their consequences. This skill is also useful to promote social justice and equity in STEM. As we revise our models of education, I argue that key assumptions such as the neutrality of science and mathematics should be questioned. I explore alternate versions of a more humanizing mathematics and science model.

Physics & Astronomy SEA Change is a project to help physics and astronomy departments become more equitable and inclusive via a comprehensive self-assessment regarding their policies, practices, outcomes, and culture, in line with the broader goals of AAAS SEA Change. Physics & Astronomy SEA Change is a collaboration among multiple physics and astronomy professional societies, including the AAS, the American Association of Physics Teachers, the American Physical Society, and others listed on the Physics & Astronomy SEA Change website.
