This Hubble Space Telescope image shows the supernova remnant N 63A. Though a star that explodes as a supernova is fully destroyed, a nearby companion to the doomed star might survive — and finding such a companion in the debris can tell us a great deal about how the explosion came to occur. To learn about a recent search for a star that survived a supernova, you can read our AAS Nova highlight and the corresponding research article in the Astrophysical Journal.
